Take the World Home

When people travel they often take home souvenirs.  I am familiar with magnets, mugs, drinking glasses, hats, t-shirts, bumper stickers, bells, key chains, miniatures and books.  As a family we have adopted a few practices of our own.  We take plenty of photos, I focus on things and places while my wife gets the family shots.  My wife has a photo collection of unique and interesting doors.  Our son collects key chains, miniatures of landmarks, and brochures from attractions we have visited.  We have some books and most recently we have started to collect patches.  We get double souvenir value by sending a postcard to ourselves giving us the postcard and the often interesting stamp.

My favorite souvenir is a piece of the Berlin Wall which was "hand-picked" and given to me by a friend.  I have visited the Wall but you may no longer pick your own chunk, you must purchase from official sellers.  The piece of the Wall is a reminder of what it was in the past and the fact that I have it means that the Wall has been torn down and freedom given to millions.

I am curious as to what souvenirs my readers collect.  Are there any topics or themes that you seek to photograph?  Do you have any favorite souvenir?  Please share in the comments below and thank you for your input.

  1. I forgot to add in that we love to visit cemeteries and prisons and that our son collects souvenir coins.
